After years of whispers, false starts, and wishful thinking, Trouble Boys: The True Story of The Replacements is officially being adapted for film. The project, based on Bob Mehr’s definitive 2016 biography, is in development with Finn Wolfhard co-writing and producing alongside his father Eric Wolfhard and producer Rich Peete.
Mehr’s book is widely considered the last word on the band. It is sprawling, messy, heartbreaking and funny in equal measure. It traces the Minneapolis group from basement noise merchants to accidental spokesmen for a generation that did not quite fit anywhere. If the film captures even half of that contradiction, it could become one of the more interesting rock biopics in years.
No casting has been announced yet. Which means the real sport can begin.
Below, a few names that feel right in spirit and silhouette. Consider this an open ballot.
Paul Westerberg
Frontman. Reluctant star. The guy who could write a perfect song and then sabotage it five minutes later.
Westerberg needs someone who can play charm and self-doubt at the same time. Someone who looks like he might bolt from his own success.
Who gets your vote for Paul. The brooding poet or the beautiful mess.
Bob Stinson
Lead guitarist. Instigator. Human lightning bolt.
Bob cannot be played safely. He was funny, reckless, magnetic and spiraling all at once. The actor has to feel slightly dangerous even when standing still.
If you are casting Bob, are you going chaos or tragedy.
Tommy Stinson
Teenage bass prodigy. Baby-faced and battle-tested before he could legally drink.
Tommy needs someone who can play young without playing naive. He grew up fast inside that band.
Do you cast for innocence or for the kid who already knows too much.
Chris Mars
Drummer. Anchor. The quiet one who watched everything.
Mars was not the loudest personality in the room, but he may have been the most perceptive. His later life as a painter adds another layer. This role needs subtlety.
When you picture Chris behind the kit, who feels right. The observer or the slow burn.
