about the project and casting

Hulu secured the rights to adapt the book into a TV miniseries before its release. Liz Tigelaar and Taylor Jenkins Reid will serve as executive producers, with Amy Talkington penning the screen adaptation.

The prologue sets the scene during the 1983 Malibu fire, coinciding with Nina Riva’s annual party. Nina, recently abandoned by her husband due to infidelity, worries about facing questions at the event. She is supported by her brothers Jay, a surfer, and Hud, a photographer, along with their younger sister Kit. Flashbacks reveal their tumultuous family history, including their parents June and Mick’s rocky relationship. In the present, Jay grapples with a newfound heart condition while pursuing Lara, Kit anticipates her first kiss, and Hud struggles with confessing his relationship with Jay’s ex. The party unfolds with revelations: Ashley is pregnant with Hud’s child, and Casey, another of Mick’s offspring, emerges. Amidst chaos, Nina asserts her independence, rejecting her husband’s plea for reconciliation. Mick attempts reconciliation with his children but ultimately leaves. The siblings embrace their newfound autonomy, supporting each other’s dreams. As Mick departs, he inadvertently sparks a fire, symbolizing both destruction and renewal for the Riva family and Malibu itself.
