Jason Momoa is trading his trident for a new kind of cosmic chaos. The actor, best known for portraying Aquaman in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), will star as Lobo, the cigar-chomping alien bounty hunter, in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. The news was confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter.

Lobo, created by writer Roger Slifer and artist Keith Giffen, first appeared in Omega Men #3 in 1983. Known for his blue skin, superstrength, and healing abilities, Lobo has fought heroes and villains alike, becoming a cult favorite among comic book fans. The character’s larger-than-life personality and penchant for destruction make him a perfect fit for Momoa’s on-screen charisma.

Momoa has been vocal about his desire to play Lobo, frequently mentioning the role during press tours. On Monday, he shared an Instagram post with a quote from his Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom press rounds, where he expressed his hopes to tackle the part, captioning it with the words, “they called.”

A New Chapter for DC

Momoa’s casting marks a significant shift in the DC Universe under the leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran. While the new DC regime has moved on from many actors tied to the DCEU, they’ve hinted at retaining fan favorites for new roles. Momoa is the first major star to make the leap, proving Gunn and Safran’s willingness to reimagine beloved actors in fresh contexts.

This isn’t Lobo’s first attempt at a live-action adaptation. Filmmakers like Guy Ritchie and Brad Peyton have tried to bring him to the big screen, with Dwayne Johnson once considered for the role. Michael Bay and Warner Bros. also explored a Lobo movie in 2018, but none of these projects materialized. Lobo did make a small-screen debut, played by Emmett J. Scanlan, in the SyFy series Krypton.

The Road Ahead for DC

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, slated for a June 26, 2026 release, stars Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon) as Kara Zor-El and will be the second film in the revamped DC Universe, following Gunn’s Superman: Legacy.

Momoa’s time as Aquaman has left an indelible mark on the previous DC era. The actor appeared as the Atlantean hero in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), Justice League (2017), and his solo debut, Aquaman (2018), which grossed over $1 billion worldwide. However, the sequel, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, fell short commercially and critically, earning $439 million globally.

With Momoa’s transition to Lobo, fans are eager to see how the actor will channel his signature intensity into this chaotic and unpredictable character.
