Joni Mitchell (b. November 7, 1943) is a Canadian singer-songwriter, painter, and one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. Known for her poetic lyricism, open tunings, and genre-blurring approach, Mitchell’s music has spanned folk, jazz, rock, and pop. Her 1971 album Blue is often cited as one of the greatest albums of all time, praised for its emotional depth and musical innovation.

Born Roberta Joan Anderson in Fort Macleod, Alberta, and raised in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Mitchell began her career performing in coffeehouses before moving to the U.S. in the mid-1960s. She first gained recognition when other artists, including Judy Collins, began covering her songs. By the late ’60s, Mitchell had signed to Reprise Records and released Song to a Seagull (1968), beginning a string of acclaimed albums including Ladies of the Canyon (1970), Court and Spark (1974), and the experimental Hejira (1976).

An accomplished painter, Mitchell often designed her own album covers, underscoring her multidisciplinary artistry. She has received numerous accolades, including multiple Grammy Awards, induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (1997), and recognition as a cultural icon whose work continues to inspire generations of musicians and songwriters.
