Awesomeness TV has landed the TV rights to That Friend, the debut audiobook from rising comedian and multi-hyphenate Sabrina Brier, released yesterday by Simon & Schuster. The project, set to be developed into a TV series, will bring Brier’s hilarious and relatable Gen Z world to the screen in a fresh, timely adaptation.
Set against the vibrant, fast-paced backdrop of New York City, That Friend follows a 20-something aspiring influencer juggling the chaos of launching her podcast, navigating life with her three best friends, managing a dwindling bank account, and chasing her dreams of making it big. Awesomeness TV will serve as the studio and executive producer for the series.
The audiobook, narrated by Brier herself, features an all-star lineup of cameos, including Danielle Brooks, Nicola Coughlan, Anthony Ramos, Rachel Dratch, Rachel Zegler, and Lukas Gage.
“Sabrina’s unique comedic voice and undeniable talent have resonated with fans everywhere, and we’re thrilled to collaborate with her on That Friend,” said Shauna Phelan, Head of Live-Action Scripted for Nickelodeon and Awesomeness. “The world she’s created is both hilarious and deeply relevant, and we can’t wait to expand this universe for the screen.”
Brier shared her excitement, saying, “I’m beyond grateful to continue the journey of That Friend, which started as short-form online content and grew into a full-cast audiobook. Partnering with Awesomeness TV, a true creative powerhouse, to bring this story—and someone so close to my heart—to life on screen is a dream come true.”
Known for her viral internet sketches and sharp comedic timing, Brier has quickly become a rising star. She recently appeared on the Emmy-winning Abbott Elementary and has performed stand-up at iconic New York venues. Brier also showcased her talents at the 2024 Netflix Is a Joke Festival in Los Angeles. Her impressive resume includes roles as a writer’s assistant on Hank Steinberg’s ABC drama For Life and Steven Soderbergh’s web series Command Z. Her original pilot, Divine, was named one of the Top 25 Best Pilots of 2021 by Roadmap Writers.
Awesomeness, a Gen Z-focused media company, has a proven track record of creating hits like Netflix’s To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before film series, the Emmy-nominated Pen15, and viral short-form YouTube content that has amassed hundreds of millions of views.
