Deadline has learned that Morena Baccarin and Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson have joined the cast of Amazon MGM Studios and Mattel’s upcoming live-action Masters of the Universe film, directed by Travis Knight (Bumblebee). Baccarin will take on the role of The Sorceress, while Jóhannesson will portray Malcolm/Fisto.

The two actors join a star-studded ensemble led by Nicholas Galitzine as He-Man, alongside Camila Mendes as Teela, Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn, Jared Leto as Skeletor, Idris Elba as Duncan/Man-at-Arms, Sam C. Wilson as Trap Jaw, Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson as Goat Man, and Kojo Attah as Tri-Klops. The script is penned by Chris Butler, with an earlier draft by David Callaham, and Aaron and Adam Nee contributing as well.

Produced by Escape Artists and Mattel Films, plot details remain under wraps. However, in previous iterations of the Masters of the Universe franchise—including the beloved 1980s toy line and animated series—Castle Grayskull serves as the key battleground, with Skeletor, Hordak, and the Snake Men vying for its hidden power, believing it will grant them dominion over Eternia and beyond. The fortress plays a crucial role in He-Man’s transformation.

Character Background

The Sorceress, guardian of Castle Grayskull, protects its vast knowledge and mystical power. In earlier Masters of the Universe canon, she is also the mother of Teela. While inside Grayskull, she wields immense magical abilities, but outside its walls, she transforms into Zoar, a falcon, and communicates telepathically with her allies.

Fisto, initially a villain under Skeletor’s command and ruler of the forest, later redeems himself to become one of Eternia’s heroes. Recognized for his immense strength and an oversized, armored fist, he also possesses a unique skill in taming and training wild creatures, including his pet Arachna.

Cast & Representation

Baccarin, known for her Emmy-nominated role in Homeland, has an extensive filmography including Deadpool, Deadpool & Wolverine, Fast Charlie, The Good House, and Ode to Joy. She will next be seen in Amazon MGM Studios’ The Wrecking Crew alongside Dave Bautista and Jason Momoa. Her television credits include Fox’s Gotham, ABC’s V, The Mentalist, and Joss Whedon’s cult classic Firefly. She is represented by UTA, Seven Summits Pictures and Management, and Schreck Rose Dapello Adams Berlin & Dunham LLP.

Jóhannesson, soon to appear as Copperhead in Marvel Studios’ Captain America: Brave New World, has previously starred in Infinite (Paramount), Zone 414, Alpha (dir. Albert Hughes), and Bloodshot (Sony). His television credits include Succession, Vikings: Valhalla, The Witcher, The Last Kingdom (Netflix), and Game of Thrones (HBO). He is represented by Independent Talent Group, Crimson Media, and Ginsburg Daniels Kallis LLP.
